The NSW Biodiversity Conservation Trust (BCT), as part of the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW), has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Media & Communications Officer to help tell the stories behind biodiversity conservation, develop compelling communication campaigns, and build awareness and support for the BCT's important work across New South Wales.

About the role

The Senior Media and Communications Officer plays a key role in shaping and delivering strategic communications that enhance awareness, understanding and support for the Biodiversity Conservation Trust's objectives and achievements. Reporting to the Manager, Media and Communications, the role leads the development and implementation of media and communication strategies, manages stakeholder engagement activities, and provides expert communications and media advice across the organisation.

Working closely with internal teams and external stakeholders, the successful candidate will develop compelling communication products, coordinate media and promotional activities, support events and campaigns, and help position the BCT as a trusted leader in biodiversity conservation. The role requires strong stakeholder management skills, sound judgement in managing sensitive issues, and the ability to communicate complex environmental topics to a broad range of audiences.

This is an exciting opportunity for a communications professional with experience in strategic communications, media relations and stakeholder engagement to contribute to meaningful environmental outcomes and help tell the story of biodiversity conservation across New South Wales.

About you

You are a strategic and proactive communications professional with experience developing and delivering communication, engagement and media initiatives that drive positive outcomes. You have a strong ability to translate complex information into clear, engaging content tailored to a range of audiences and communication channels.

To be successful in this role, you will bring:

• Experience developing and implementing communication strategies, media plans and engagement activities that support organisational objectives.
• Strong writing and editing skills, with the ability to produce high-quality communication materials across a variety of formats and channels.
• Demonstrated experience managing media relations, preparing media materials and providing communications advice on complex or sensitive issues.
• Excellent stakeholder engagement and relationship management skills, with the ability to work collaboratively across teams and with external partners to achieve shared outcomes.
• Strong judgement, initiative and problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.
• Confidence in providing trusted communications advice and influencing stakeholders through clear, evidence-based recommendations.
• Experience using contemporary communication channels and digital platforms to engage diverse audiences.
• Knowledge of environmental, conservation or government sectors will be highly regarded, although applicants with transferable communications expertise are encouraged to apply.

• Relevant tertiary qualification/s and/or experience in developing and implementing communication strategies.

The New South Wales Biodiversity Conservation Trust (BCT) is a not-for-profit statutory body, established under Part 10 of the Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016 and managed by a Board appointed by the Minister for the Environment.

The Trust’s roles are to support and encourage landholders to enter into agreements to conserve and protect biodiversity on private land, guided by the government’s Biodiversity Conservation Investment Strategy; secure biodiversity offsets when developers choose to pay into the Biodiversity Conservation Fund; and other activities that promote greater awareness of, appreciation and understanding of, biodiversity and the importance of conserving it.

We acknowledge the ongoing custodial responsibilities of the Aboriginal peoples of NSW to care for Country and are committed to establishing meaningful partnerships with Aboriginal peoples in the management of the environment.

Participation in the NSW Biodiversity Offsets Scheme (BOS) and the BCT’s private land conservation (PLC) programs

The successful applicant for this role will be required to declare any conflict of interests related to the Biodiversity Offsets Scheme, as defined in the Biodiversity Offsets Scheme Conflict of Interests Protocol here. This ensures the department is made aware of potential conflicts of interest so they can be appropriately managed.

Where an applicant has a high-risk “defined interest” in the Biodiversity Offsets Scheme, they may be required to divest this interest before being employed by the department.

The BCT also has restrictions on staff participation in its funded PLC programs. No additional funding, beyond that already agreed to by the BCT, may be sought or approved during time as a BCT employee or for a 12-month period following termination of employment.
