Job Description

The Australian Financial Review is seeking a Markets Reporter to run the high-profile Markets Live Blog which covers equities, bonds, currencies, commodities, crypto, and finance for a sharp, influential audience. The Markets Live Blog is often the most-read article on the AFR homepage, with a reputation for delivering fast-paced, essential news for the business community. Join a globally-minded newsroom known for its independent journalism and help shape coverage of the forces driving the new economy.

Day to day you will:

  • Take ownership of the high-profile AFR Markets Live blog, writing blog posts and co-ordinating breaking financial news during ASX trading hours.
  • Jump on breaking news, market movers, ASX announcements, broker research, and macro and geopolitical events that may impact markets and the economy.
  • Write rolling sharemarket reports for both online and print that are filled with market colour and commentary.
  • Pitch original ideas for long form articles to help expand coverage of markets, business, and the economy.
  • Build strong contacts across financial markets to help break exclusive stories.
  • Work to tight, real-time deadlines with accuracy and speed.
  • Collaborate closely with reporters, editors, and producers across the newsroom.
     

Qualifications

What you’ll bring:

  • Proven experience as a financial journalist with an ability to break news.
  • A firm grasp of global financial markets and the themes that intrigue investors.
  • A degree in journalism or finance/economics, and sharp editorial instincts.
  • Excellent writing skills across news, features and other formats.
  • Ability to meet strict production deadlines.
  • A team player with a collaborative mindset and experience working in a fast-paced newsroom.
