Job Description

We are seeking a high-calibre Deputy News Director to support the Sydney News Director in driving the operational and strategic evolution of our Sydney newsroom. This is a pivotal leadership position designed for a professional who excels at balancing high-level editorial oversight with the business mechanics of a modern, multi-platform news organisation.

The successful candidate will support the News Director in driving day-to-day newsroom performance, long-term strategy, and multi-platform growth, while fostering a positive, collaborative culture.

Key Responsibilities

Day to day, you will:

  • Partner with the News Director to develop, execute, and support long-term newsroom strategies that ensure future growth and market dominance.
  • Lead the charge on resource allocation, budget management, and overall newsroom performance metrics to ensure operational excellence.
  • Drive digital-first workflows, leveraging analytics to inform content decisions and audience engagement strategies across all platforms.
  • Provide high-level editorial oversight, ensuring all content meets rigorous legal and ethical standards while maintaining journalistic integrity.
  • Act as the primary bridge between News and other key operational departments, to streamline workflows and maximise cross-departmental opportunities.
  • Foster a high-performance culture by providing consistent leadership support and professional growth opportunities for the team.
  • Mentor editorial staff and producers to cultivate a pipeline of internal talent and improve overall newsroom capability.
  • Implement innovative technologies and reporting techniques to stay ahead of industry trends.
  • Ensure seamless integration between broadcast and digital teams to deliver a unified multi-platform journalism strategy.
  • Step into high-level decision-making roles in the absence of the News Director to provide continuity and leadership stability.

Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you will be a strategic leader who understands that a modern newsroom’s success relies as much on empowering people and fostering a collaborative culture as it does on editorial excellence.

What you’ll bring:

  • Expert knowledge of a major newsroom and the intricate day-to-day operations required to run it.
  • A deep understanding of both the Sydney and Australian media landscape and audience behaviours.
  • Demonstrated ability to guide teams through operational shifts and evolving industry landscapes.
  • Deep understanding of newsroom analytics and the technical requirements of multi-platform distribution.
  • Cultivates team stability and growth via accessible leadership and active professional mentoring
  • Extensive experience managing complex budgets and optimising resources in a commercial environment.
