Job Description

The Community Engagement Editor sits within the Audience Engagement team and is at the forefront of connecting our audiences with content, journalists, and the core values of The Australian Financial Review (AFR). Your role is essential in driving meaningful discussions, fostering a sense of belonging among our readers, and owning key moments to amplify AFR’s journalism.

Based in the newsroom, you’ll collaborate closely with editorial teams, leveraging data and engagement strategies to deepen the relationship between the AFR and its audience, both online and in-person. By building a dynamic community, you will play a pivotal role in growing loyalty and engagement across the AFR readership.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement strategies to cultivate a loyal and engaged audience.
  • Collaborate with editorial teams to encourage reader interaction and discussions.
  • Participate in editorial planning meetings, and create  engagement plans for promoting flagship newsroom initiatives.
  • Work closely with editorial, product, and strategy teams to align audience engagement strategies with editorial values, using analytics to drive audience experience and reduce churn.
  • Co-create and promote content that encourages reader interaction, including exclusive subscriber stories and new formats.
  • Coordinate and execute engagement strategies to maximise audience interaction with major editorial projects and initiatives.
  • Identify and develop new opportunities for audience engagement through creative formats, reader stories, and live events.
  • Work with newsroom teams to create content that showcases behind-the-scenes stories and highlights our journalists' expertise.
  • Monitor and respond to reader feedback and complaints in a professional, timely manner.
  • Identify and organise in-person events to enhance relationships with our audience.

Qualifications

What we would like to see: 

  • Strong communication skills with experience in writing concise, impactful copy and scripts.
  • Proven ability to experiment with new formats and engage diverse audiences across various platforms.
  • Editorial experience and an understanding of newsroom operations.
  • Solid understanding of the AFR brand and its editorial attributes.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.
  • Experience working collaboratively within a close-knit, dynamic team.
