Job Description

We're looking for a highly analytical and strategic Audience Editor to join The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age on a 12-month contract. This key role involves partnering with our newsrooms to translate audience data into actionable, data-driven strategies that drive enhanced engagement, increase subscriber conversions, and cultivate long-term reader retention. This role has a particular focus on the masthead’s Life topic areas including the Arts, Culture, and Lifestyle teams as well as our preeminent brands Good Food and Traveller and magazines Good Weekend and Sunday Life.

Reporting to the Head of Audience Strategy, you will work with a close-knit team of six that is embedded within our newsrooms. This role can be based in Sydney or Melbourne and will work across Nine Publishing’s mastheads. 

Day to day you will:

  • Analyse audience data to identify growth opportunities.
  • Provide strategic advice to journalists and editors to optimise content production.
  • Track topic performance through regular weekly and monthly reports  
  • Present findings and insights at monthly meetings with Life topic editors, and ad hoc as requested
  • Help guide decision making around content rollout and marketing, on a weekly basis.
  • Work on longer-term deep dives and analysis projects as requested.
  • Monitor industry trends to inform editorial decision-making and strategy.
  • Act as the representative voice of the audience within newsroom settings.
  • Collaborate with the wider Audience Growth team to align and share priorities.
  • Assess content performance regularly and pivot strategies based on insights.
