The Role
The ABC is looking for a journalist who loves getting out on in the field, meeting people, breaking news stories and capturing the colour of Southern Queensland. Our reporters write digital articles and make audio and video packages for radio, TV and the ABC’s online audience. Perched on the edge of the Great Dividing Range, Toowoomba is known as the Garden City and has a population around 160,000. It’s 90 minutes from Brisbane, 2 hours from the Gold Coast and 3 hours from the Sunshine Coast. Toowoomba is the hub for southern Queensland and offers a great lifestyle from the adventurous mountain bike and walking tracks to the serenity of the lush rainforests of the Bunya Mountains and wineries of the Granite Belt. Education and medical services are excellent and while a little chilly in winter, the other seasons are ideal. From the vast plains of the Darling Downs to the salad bowl of the Lockyer Valley the region offers a wide variety of opportunities and experiences.
The Job
Reporting to the Editor, Toowoomba, you will be responsible for:
- Creating multi-platform content under Editor’s direction
- Producing news bulletins, Q&As, interviews, and breaking stories
- Assisting in planning and commissioning new content
- Developing local stories for sharing across ABC teams
- Supporting Local Emergency Coverage and stakeholder communication
- Producing diverse stories reflecting Australia’s communities

About You
- journalism qualification or equivalent experience
- Experience delivering breaking content on multiple platforms
- Strong editorial skills and sound judgment
- Understanding of local audience issues
- Valid driver’s license and willing to travel remotely
- Passion for diverse, authentic Australian stories
- Ability to build and maintain community contacts
