Job Description
Join The Australian Financial Review as a Markets Reporter and take the reins of our high-profile, widely read Markets Live blog. In this fast-paced role, you will deliver lively, accurate, and agenda-setting coverage across equities, bonds, currencies, commodities, and crypto for Australia’s premier business publication. It’s an exciting opportunity to report breaking news, cultivate key industry contacts, and produce compelling print and digital journalism for a highly engaged audience.
Day to day you will:
- Drive and maintain the AFR Markets Live blog, ensuring up-to-date, accurate, and engaging coverage during ASX trading hours.
- Coordinate and write breaking news posts to drive digital traffic, responding rapidly to global market-moving events.
- Write a rolling sharemarket report for the print edition and produce in-depth research, interviews, and long-form articles.
- Generate original story pitches and ideas that expand newsroom coverage across business, markets, and the broader economy.
- Cultivate and maintain a strong network of contacts across financial markets to break exclusive news stories.
- Collaborate closely with newsroom editors and journalists on overarching coverage plans and key projects.
What you'll bring:
- Proven experience as a financial journalist with an ability to break news.
- An understanding of global financial markets, major asset classes, and key investor themes.
- Tertiary qualification in Journalism, Finance, or a related discipline.
- Strong writing skills across breaking news, feature reporting, and digital formats.
- Demonstrated ability to generate original story ideas and meet deadlines.
- Strong interpersonal skills with a collaborative, team-first mindset in a fast-paced newsroom environment.
- An established network of financial market contacts and experience with digital article production (highly regarded).
