Job Description

The Australian Financial Review is seeking a Breaking News Reporter to cover the high-profile Need to Know daily news blog, delivering timely national and international coverage. Reporting to the News Director, you will drive website traffic by coordinating and creating sharp, accurate content for an engaged audience. This is a prime opportunity to collaborate with an industry-leading newsroom and shape contemporary digital storytelling. The role includes weekend shifts.

Day to day you will:

  • Run the fast-paced Need to Know news blog, ensuring highly accurate coverage.
  • Write breaking news posts, integrating pictures, video or other assets, and co-ordinate contributions from reporters and wire services.
  • Collaborate with editors, journalists and producers to ensure fast, relevant blog posts and assist with broader news coverage.
  • Manage tight, real-time deadlines while maintaining exceptional editorial standards.
  • Engage with feedback professionally and foster a collaborative team environment.

What you'll bring:

  • Prior experience reporting on breaking news, ideally with a major media outlet.
  • A strong grasp of national and international current affairs.
  • Proven capability to make sound, independent editorial judgment calls.
  • Exceptional writing skills across news, features and various digital formats.
  • A degree in journalism, finance, or a related tertiary qualification.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with an ability to thrive under strict deadlines.
  • Experience in digital article production or newsroom environments is highly regarded.
